African Thriller Remix Contest

"African Thriller", the first single from Rocky Dawuni's forthcoming Branches of the Same Tree (out March 31st, 2015) embodies a unique and accessible "Afro-Roots" sound: a sumptuously funky blend of soul, pop, Afrobeat and reggae grooves. With his internationally recognized charisma and reputation as a dedicated activist, Rocky is a galvanizing performer and now he wants you to remix his celebratory track! 

The “African Thriller Remix Contest” is your opportunity to express yourself through Rocky Dawuni’s music in whatever genre of your choosing. All are encouraged to enter and winners will be selected directly by Rocky. Be as creative as you can and transform Rocky’s music!

In his own words: "My song 'African Thriller' represents a cultural fusion of musical styles and challenging boundaries. I believe it lends itself to exciting and interesting sonic interpretations."

This month, the electrifying video for “African Thriller” features DJ and Producer Jeremey Sole's remixed version of the song. Sole, an acclaimed host on Los Angeles' taste-defining radio station KCRW has previously remixed tracks for Femi KutiDavid BowieThievery Corporation and Quantic among others. Watch the video here.

The Grand Prize Winner's track will be promoted through the artist’s and label's social media and the winner will receive The House of Marleys lux Bamboo Get Together Bluetooth ® Portable Audio System as well as a signed, limited-edition vinyl copy of Rocky’s new album Branches of the Same Tree. Two Runner Ups will receive the stylish Liberate On-Ear Headphones also from The House of Marley.

Contest Rules and Guidelines




Open worldwide to entrants who are aged 16 or older. Entrants who are under age  in their country should get parent(s) or guardian(s) permission before entering. Musicians who are under an exclusive contract with a record label are ineligible. No purchase is necessary to enter or win this contest.


How to submit:


Upload your remix to this soundcloud group with download disabled, named using this pattern “African Thriller (Your Name Remix). Soundcloud-message Cumbancha with your name, email address and a link to your remix. Cumbancha will respond to confirm receipt of your remix.




The best remixes will be chosen based upon the quality of music, production values used in making the remix and the preference of the judge(s). Judging will be done by the artist and management team.

The remix stems are provided for you to make a remix for this contest ONLY. They can not be distributed elsewhere. You can not use the remix files within your own tracks unless you get permission from the Cumbancha record label.


Rights (Remixes):


Remixes can not be distributed for sale without the permission of Cumbancha record label. Without limitation of the foregoing, the Remixed Master will be deemed a “work made for hire” for Cumbancha, and Cumbancha shall have the exclusive right to copyright the Remixed Master in its name and to secure any and all renewals and extensions of such copyright (including the underlying musical composition) throughout the World and in perpetuity. Accordingly, the track, the Remixed Master, and all duplicates and derivatives thereof, are and will be the property of Cumbancha throughout the world and in perpetuity from the inception of their creation, and Cumbancha shall have the exclusive right to use or not use the Remixed Master in any medium or manner, by any method now known or hereafter created. Remixer agrees that each recording or derivative thereof of the Remixed Master is a work made for hire and, additionally, a contribution to a collective work. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, we and our designees will have the exclusive, perpetual right throughout the universe from the inception of creation: (a) to manufacture, sell, distribute, promote, advertise and otherwise exploit phonograph records embodying the Remixed Master under any trademarks, trade names, service marks or labels; (b) to lease, license, convey, or otherwise use, alter, adapt, change, or dispose of the Remixed Master, or parts thereof, by any method now or hereafter known in any media or field of use; and (c) to perform publicly phonograph records, whether on radio, television, in audiovisual works or elsewhere, and all other reproductions embodying the Remixed Master; all upon such terms as we may approve in our sole discretion; without any compensation to you other than as specifically set forth in this Remix Agreement.  For the avoidance of any doubt, Remixer hereby irrevocably waives any claims, right, title or interest, including, without limitation, any copyright interest, in any composition embodied on the Remixed Master. No materials (including, but not limited to, any so-called "samples") furnished by Remixer contained in the Remixed Master will violate or infringe upon any rights of any person or entity.

Rocky Dawuni is a musician and humanitarian activist from Ghana, West Africa. Named one of Africa's Top 10 global stars by CNN, his recordings and thrilling live performances have attracted thousands to his concerts around the world at top festivals and prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Dawuni has collaborated and performed with Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Jason Mraz, Janelle Monae and John Legend, among many others.
